Record companies have always claimed that a download from iTunes or other online services have been “licenses” and not “sales”.  This is a way for them to hold rights over the information.  However, most record contracts give much more money to the artist for a license over a sale, as in the old model, a sale cost much more money then a license.  This is finally coming back...
